Moving Soon? 10 Tips For Packing Up Your Home

Finding a new home is an exciting part of life - until the thought of inevitably having to pack up all your belongings creeps in. However, there are ways to make packing less stressful. A little preparation, organization, and efficiency will help your move go smoothly.

As you prepare to move, follow these tips for packing. Soon you'll be celebrating a successful move in your new home!

COLLECT BOXES AND SUPPLIES

Before you even start to pack, collect everything you need so you don't have to make a trip to the store in the midst of packing. Make sure you have durable boxes in various sizes, packing tape, scissors, and packing materials like newspaper and bubble wrap.

DECLUTTER

Decluttering may have been on your to-do list for a while, but now is really the time to make it happen. You don't want to move what you no longer want or need, so before you start packing things up, determine what you want to keep, what needs to be thrown away, and what can be sold or given away.

PACK OVER TIME

Packing can feel overwhelming, so if you can, pack over time rather than leaving the task for one day. Set a timer, put on some music, and pack for an hour or two a day leading up to your move to make the process more manageable. If you give yourself time, you'll be more likely to pack with purpose rather than just throwing things in a box that could be better packed separately.

DON'T LEAVE EMPTY SPACE IN BOXES

Making the most of the space you have is an efficient way to pack. Fill in empty spaces in boxes with clothes, blankets, towels, packing peanuts, or anything else that makes use of the space while protecting items from rattling around. Fill boxes just to their full capacity, though - overstuffing boxes can lead to them tearing or being hard to lift.

WRAP FRAGILE ITEMS CAREFULLY

When preparing to move, do your research on how to pack fragile items. Things like dishes should be wrapped in newspaper, packing paper, bubble wrap, or other packing material. For TVs, remove cables and other accessories before wrapping the screen in a soft blanket and placing it in the correct size box.

USE THE RIGHT SIZE BOXES

Be strategic about what goes where. Small boxes work well for small items like books, movies, sheets, and small appliances like alarm clocks. Medium sized boxes are the right choice for slightly larger objects like toys, video games, blenders, and coffee makers. Large boxes are best for bulky items that don't weigh too much, like clothes, towels, or lampshades. Don't put many heavy items together in a large box. The box may not be able to withstand the weight and will be hard to lift.

PUT HEAVIEST ITEMS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX

Put the heaviest items at the bottom of boxes. Otherwise, they'll just be weighing down the light items. The same goes for loading a moving truck - put the heaviest items on the bottom so your things don't get crushed.

PACK USING REPURPOSED ITEMS

Since everything must be moved, utilize the space you have wherever you have it. Pack items inside suitcases, laundry baskets, hampers, and backpacks. You can even stuff socks or small items inside your shoes.

LABEL AS YOU GO

Label boxes with what room the items inside belong to and if they contain fragile objects. You'll end up with multiple boxes that all are labeled for one room, so be as specific as possible to set yourself up for a simple unpacking process. When it comes to the kitchen, for example, you'll want to know exactly which box contains your fragile dishes.

PACK DAILY ESSENTIALS SEPARATELY

Keep your daily essentials together so they're easy to find on night one. Pack a bag with your  toothbrush, a change of clothes, and toiletries. You'll also want to set aside any medications so they don't get lost among the boxes. It's a good idea to have a first aid kit, tools, cleaning supplies, and snacks on hand on moving day.
